The War on Slavery

Lincoln was obsessed with East Tennessee, which had a strong unionist community. The ruling class in the north who were the budding oligarchy found slavery distasteful and so on. But they first and foremost wanted to keep the union together. So the south can't be allowed to succeed, but we won't mess with them either.
