The literary and scholarly term for this is the perspicuity of scripture. It's a very populous understanding of scripture that could only come out of the enlightendment. The idea that the common person possesses some sort of magical common sense to see reality the way it is is vastly appealing if yere's somebody that has been lowered down on the social hierarchy.
