The Role of Civil Society in the Boom and Bust Cycle
In many places, especially if you're dealing with poor populations, it's very hard to stick. In my great grandfather's case, he was trying to start farming during the Great Depression. He would not have been able to stick or to build a farm, if not for those people. And so I think in many communities, the ability to survive through extremely hard times is built on those associations and that sense of membership.
