Shakespeare describes the two figures as an angel and a devil sitting on either shoulder. He casts them here as kind of opposites, counterparts, contrasting with one another. The weird surprise that comes up in the middle of this poem is that the two of them shack up together. It's full of sexual innuendo, some of it quite dirty.
