The Role of Cyclic AMP in Odor Sensitivity
There is a well defined signal transduction pathway that runs from these G proteins through specific adenol cyclases. And it turns out that there's a really interesting molecular program that coordinates the expression of all of these genes, and kind of turns them all up or down adaptively. So if you're in an environment where a particular olfactory sensory neuron That's expressing a particular receptor is being subjected to a lot of activity, yeah, transcriptionally, that cell will turn down the expression of those 70 genes. But conversely, if like a neuron isn't particularly active, that that program gets going and progressively turned up, kind of adjusting each neurons sensitivity to odors.
