Introduction
The modern university began initially as a project of theologians thinking about the unity of knowledge. Thirteenth century faculties in European universities at Padua, Paris and Oxford were formed from cathedral schools. The great scholastic doctors of the first two centuries of university life typically sought to answer key questions that self-consciously touched directly on the definition of the modern university.
