I learned by pretty much making every mistake possible. I shot programs that had to do with politics, the arts, history and then edit them. And so I learned to tell a story that way. At the end of the day, we had a decent enough story. So I was got into the film department. The station was KPBS in San Diego. That station didn't have a lot of money. It did get me out of the studio. After about a year, I felt like I was totally cracking up. He went to Hawaii for several months and he just hitchhiked and backpacked around the islands.
