The debtor's labor already wields, or has wielded, enormous power over other people. This is one of the products of the righteous indignation Graber described earlier. The adventurers may have weapons, they may have some training, but at the end of the day, they have very little in terms of liquid capital. On the higher end are people like Cortez, who, having already technically, you know, who are already technically plantation owners and still managed to become heavily indebted.
