The most striking feature of dreaming is that although you're asleep, you're conscious. That made me interested in the role of those nuclei in generating consciousness. I teamed up with a brilliant neuroscientist who sadly died a few years ago named the Akpanksep. He was doing the most interesting work of all time on how these deep brainstem mechanisms are the source of consciousness. So its consciousness is derived from those primitive affective instinctual mechanisms at the core of the brain.
