Why Is the Self Illusion Important?
Righman: I think it's important for several reasons. Part of our task os human beings is the socratic task rigte no know thyself, to try to understand who we are and what it is to lead a human life. The self illusion functions as a kind of foundation for a moral egoism that i think can be extraordinarily corrosive. Reactive attitudes like blame and anger where we take other people to be selves acting freely also have an impact on relationships. So from all those reasons, i think this isn't just idle philosophical curiosity, but one that can actually enrich our lives if we get clearer about it.
