History's Greatest Cities

CHAPTER

The History of Paris

Paris is in some ways it's a legible city. It starts out in the middle and then grows outwards. The Paris just sort of expands out which from a sort of expanding darkboard or something. When you look at the medieval city on a map what strikes you is how small it was. But we do start getting walls around it from the 12th century. They take more of the right bank, the sort of business and central government within them than the South Bank. And this leads to a pretty grim period in Parisian history and indeed French history more generally.
