The Mechanisms of Magnetic Reception

The ability of many organisms to detect the Earth's magnetic field has been a mystery since its discovery. A new theory suggests sensitivity to magnetic fields is more common than we realize. The biological machine at the heart of this is something called cryptochrome. Cryptochrome is a protein found in animals' eyes, including our own. It might also be responsible for some organism's magneto reception.
