The Classical Essentialist View of Emotion
Charles Garcia: I would paint the classical essentialist view of emotion, which is very alive and well in psychology. He says it's a Western or Eurocentric stereotype of how emotions work. Some scientists adhere to that stereotype; average everyday people don't, he says. García: Pixar is great at putting emotions into everything, into cars, into robots, into a cockroach. It's wrong, but it was clever.
