I love the framework of reciprocal narrowing versus reciprocal opening, especially because with racial antipathy, what is happening in the background is a lot of fear. And I think it's fear in general that results often in that kind of reciprocal narrowing. Addictions are a reciprocally narrowing process where you start cutting off all these pieces of yourself in order to say, okay, I'm going to do this. It's like, oh, I'm an honest person, but I need heroin. So maybe I're going to steal from her moment. Now you're letting go of your commitment, honesty. Those are all reciprocally narrowing. We become addicted to outrage; we become addicted to polarization.
