Jean-Francois de la Rocte de Rabaval established a colony called France-Roy. He explored the St. Lawrence looking for jewels and precious metals, but found neither. Sickness and famine spread throughout the settlement; he denied food and water to anyone unable to work. After a few months, France-Roy collapsed entirely,. Those who were not diseased, starved, or hung, returned to France aboard a rescue fort. In 1560, he attended a secret Huguenot meeting which, it turned out, was not as secret as supposed. When he left, he was descended upon by a mob of angry Catholics and torn apart in the middle of Paris.
