It seems to me that there's a lot of talk ot scipio in particular, being military geniuses. And maybe it's around this time that it starts to become important that you have good strategy. Some people would say that it's hannibal who forced them into that, in the second punic wars. Maybe there's still a bit of anachronism going on here, that if you're consul, you get to lead the army.
