The 1904 St. Louis games were the first Olympics to have a gold, silver and bronze medal system. There were 630 athletes who competed and 523 of those were from the US. This led to a situation where some events only included US athletes as competitors. The way attendance shook out for athletes skewed the numbers really heavily for the US participants.
