The Milk Projection Reflex and Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding itself is perhaps more complex than we might think. When a baby sucks or suckles, there are nerves in the ariola and nipple that lead to the production of the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin triggers the letdown reflex - sometimes called the milk projection reflex. That stimulates the muscles in the gland of tissue of the breast to contract which squeezes the milk into the milk dax and out through those multiple openings in the nipples.
