Ashoka was a messed up guy, but he was clearly dramatized enough by what happened in kalinga that he decided to confront and learn from his mistakes. At least that's how nastalist indian leaders in the mid twentieth century wrote about him. After all, everybody likes a good redemption ark. And nationalists needed to find unifying ideas in ancient indian history to bind together this vast, diverse sub continent.
