The Impact of Iron on European Society in the First Millennium

There were many, many factors that were at work on European society in the First Millennium. The acquisition of the really efficient riding horse from the east comes in slowly, but it really gets underway about 800 years ago. Pontic step horses coming in with sort of culture that brings them into the Great Hungarian Plain and then being exchanged as items of immense prestige. It's a very valuable thing. And one finds those moving into society in the west, and a horse riding taking over as an item of display in the social structure.
