Introduction

I'm gobsmacked by the performance of large language models like chat GPT and other forms of generative AI. I suspect that the evolution of new AI tools is harder to predict than most things. Humans have been inventing technology that has replaced aspects of cognitive work for thousands of years. So one reason I can feel confident about the continued value of learning is that while chat GPT is novel, the kind of technological change it has brought about is not.
