Cannes Film Festival vs the Academy Awards?

A film festival is an event that takes place over maybe a week or a couple weeks. It's also an opportunity for people within the film industry to network, make friends with other film people and sell their films. Also involved in that often is some form of prize, judgment and awards. The Oscars on the other hand are simply an award ceremony to recognize films that have been made that year.
