Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1

5-4

CHAPTER

School Segregation in Seattle

There wasn't a law that mandated segregation, but the school district and the school board had a definite role to play in the defacto segregation. Top families were allowed to choose which high school to send their students to. But sometimes this meant over enrolment at one high school over another. A non profet organization called parents involved in community schools was set up by an angry mother who believed her daughter should not be placed where she wanted on account of her race. The supreme court struck down plans for mandatory bussing because it would have led to more widespread integration.
