Robert Nozick: Anarchy, State, & Utopia

Then & Now: Philosophy, History & Politics

CHAPTER

Introduction

Robert Nozick's 1975 book Anarchy, State and Utopia is a response to John Rooz's 1971 A Theory of Justice. In it he argues that individuals have natural rights which must be respected at all costs. The anarchist argues that because of the inviolability of individuals, no state can be justified. For Nozick, this is the fundamental question of political philosophy: whether there should be any state at all.
