"We talked about this ritual of bathing the body that's been done from millennium, you know, in every culture and every religion," she says. "This mom kept washing down this young boy's body and she got to his toes and she counted his toes." The mother would look at her with beseeching eyes: Is it possible to survive this? Can any mother survive this? And my job was to hand her another washcloth in order to back to her son, back to the suffering.
