Is the Supernova the Engine of Creation?
The supernova is the beginning of this idea of the birth of heavy elements, since they couldn't have been born at the time of the big bang. Conditions of temperature and pressure weren't sufficient to make any significant quantities of the heavier elements. But then you need some of these stars to explode, right? Because if those heavy elements remained forever trapped in the cores of stars, then they would not be available for the production of new stars, planets, and ultimately life. So indeed, the supernova plays a leading role in this whole story.
