When you do a PhD at University of Melbourne, there's not a kind of thesis defense the way we have in the US. So when you turn in your final version, which makes you officially a PhD, they give you a balloon. It's like a balloon filled with air on the end of a stick so it sticks up. But yeah, you'd get your balloon and then you'd have a party or whatever. And I've met people who break every stereotype you can think of in terms of how scientists act.
