The Importance of Co-Management in a Democracy
In Germany, workers in firms with more than 500 employees have a third of the seats on the boards that set the overall direction of the company. And then alongside having seats on the board, they also have what are known as works councils which are given a degree of power over how their firms are run. In the UK, we've had proposals for one or maybe two seats being given to workers on boards. But I think really, we should be looking to go much further than that and to have workers with half of the seats in most, if not all companies. That model would completely transform the balance of power within our workplaces. It's the best way to bring about more meaningful work
