Harvey Milk and the California State Senator John Briggs
Harvey Milk wasn't the first openly gay person elected to political office in the US as many people believe. That was Kathy Kazuchenko, an out lesbian who was elected to the Ann Arbor City Council in Michigan in April of 1974. California's former governor Ronald Reagan joined President Jimmy Carter, former President Gerald Ford and Governor Jerry Brown in urging Californians to vote no on Prop 6. The Briggs Initiative was rejected in November 1978.
