The Gardens of Fiction

Fictional gardens can help us to realise the people we aspire to be, but they also act as vessels of who we are to one another. The novels that have most shaped my relationship with the garden in recent years are those of Ali Smith's seasonal quartet. Written almost in real time between 2016 and 2020, autumn, winter, spring and summer offer a visceral embodiment of the outdoor world and human impact upon it.
