How Do We Use Realism?
How do we use realism, whether it's a smaller or a bigger that's a great question. I was trying to kind of schematize this, and i came up with, broadly, in three ways in which we might use realism. The first way is probably the one most commonly spoken of, is realism as a form of critique. There's also a less positive way of thinking about realism - you can constrain someone by saying be realistic if she wants to become a professional boxer. Realism allows us to see and represent complex systems like class conflict or commodity for what it really is.
