Why Did God Tear the Kingdom Away From the House of David?

Jeroboam was told by God to be like David only in the sense that he wasn't an idolatry. He didn't build altars to false gods or lead the people into the worship of false gods. So you went and did the very thing that got you the kingdom in the first place. It sounds like the definition of insanity. Just so much of sin, it just utter stupidity.
