Passenger and freight come from the french passage, which is still a passenger in french. Because we found passage quite difficult to pronounce with our english tongues, we put an en in there to make it easier. And then freight is linked to fraught as well because something fraught is filled with danger or anxiety. But it just meant laden. Both go back to the german vrecht and the dutch wracht, and they gave us freight in the end.
