Coppest growth according to the book Sproutlands is not a single thing but a synthetic ecosystem in which human participation is a key. Far more species of plants, insects, birds and other creatures inhabit such a mixed landscape than would live in an untouched woodland. To cut certain trees at about head height so that grazing animals can't reach the young shoots that sprout from that cut surface while coppicing is cutting closer to the ground so that the new shoots of the tree grow from that stump. This gives me hope for the giving tree even though most apple trees as we learned from the dendrology episode are grafted. If the giving tree just grows into one that makes shitty mal
