The Last Corn Holder
Evelyn had hoped that Paula would see what she so clearly saw in the man, the untenable combination of self-regard and self-hatred. Anne has never said anything outright to Paula about the night she failed to check on Frank. On the flight home from Tulsa, she was consumed by anger and she rehearsed versions of her accusation. Evelyn imagines Paula already dressed in her business, skirting jacket, her pale hose, her heels. She's divorced from Darren, whom she shouldn't have married in the first place.
