I completely agree with Lynn about you're never getting the real thing. Mainly because we're not really going to find a certain hidden attic full of the original working class Victorian voice. Those who did have the skills to read and write or the time to put themselves down on paper tended to be those who kind of risen up out of being a street seller, if you like. But it tends to be very, very thin on the ground. So whether we like it or not, I'm afraid we do have it all refracted through at least one other person.
