John Carrey met Jesse Armstrong, who was working on a possible fictional TV series about a media mogul. They needed someone to help him talk through for the pilot and what the business environment would be that he existed in. He just wanted ideas of things that had happened in the media world that he hadn't necessarily read about. The show can't be totally realistic because it is fiction, but being as realistic as possible.
