A lot of what gives us the framework for that thinking is science fiction, whether it be movies or TV or books. It was scientific discoveries that enabled us to start imagining life on other worlds. You know, rockets were first written about in science fiction before they were made real. The idea of the Dyson Sphere also shows up in Star Trek.
