Bones found in Peru were unusually thick and heavy, much more so than any whale swimming about today. Scientists speculate that it was too heavy to really swim properly. It kind of wiggled its spine up and down rather than swimming with fins as a dolphin or a whale does today. And getting itself up to the surface to breathe was probably quite a lot of effort.
