Joseph Mengele: The Chief Medical Officer at Auschwitz

Mengele was one of the few SS men at Auschwitz who had seen combat in the east. He quickly developed a special aura in the camp because of his front line fighting. Mengele coupled his combat status with a workaholic devotion to his duties. While other Auschwitz doctors did no more than was required of them, Mengele was always undertaking new projects and extra responsibility. One example of an extra responsibility he took on was eradicating a typhoid epidemic soon after his arrival.
