Most of the early germanic tribes didn't have writing at all. The anglo saxons eventually adopted the roman alphabet. This reflected the power, especially the economic power, of the romans. It also reflected the growing power of the church in europe,. which used latin as the official language of the church. And it's at this point that we can introduce our friend, a sibilation.
