Merkel's Childhood in East Germany Is Important
Merkel's childhood in what was East Germany is important actually in that respect. In her case it was certainly important, although she was somebody with strong transatlanticist convictions. But I think she epitomizes that generation of people who grew up in East Germany with a certain sympathy for Russian culture.
