Heidegger's theoretical architecture is militantly anti-materialist in that way. Marcuse wants to know how the subject can relate to itself in an unalienated way, and he sees the reasons for alienation as being a part of the social structure. So there's this almost, I think that's why it's like a phenomenon, interest in phenomenology: what it is like to experience that problem really interests him.
