It's a question that i've answered differently in different places, perhaps, or maybe similarly. But i'm having a bit of a different take on it, maybe now because of the way that you're asking it. Its sort of, you're asking a meta question, that is to say, that seems almost to push against what traditionally we are expected to do as historians.
