The Brown Dog Riots
For about two or three years, there were continuous riots. The students would come and try to attack the statue. Local people would surround the statue and try to defend it. After three years of sporadic fights in the park, the local council decided that the only way to stop this would be to get rid of the statue altogether. So the statue was removed, but not without another fight. Three thousand people protested after it was taken down. And then, you know, in those days in London, that was a big demonstration.
