Kant and Machiavelli's Republics

Kant gives us a somewhat unusual conception of what a republic is. He says that the least likely republic to arise is a democratic one because he only means of achieving it is violent revolution. Montesquieu famously argued for the separation of powers as an important thing in maintaining a republic and I don't know if that actually works in practice.
