There was quite a bit of interest before him in the phenomenon of life. A lot of it was sort of in a medical context, so people would be examining things like reproduction and diseases. He very much wanted to go beyond that and ask the why. So there were all these pre-discessors in place. But definitely there was no one who put all this data together in one go.
