The Death of Socrates and Jesus
Socrates and Christ are two figures who really have this simultaneous relationship. Western civilization is built on the death of two innocent people who genuinely abided by what they believed in. For Socrates to not drink the hemlock would be to deny his entire philosophy. And I guess for Christ to for Christ to have somehow won wouldbe to deny the sort of obligation of virtue that we've been speaking about.
