Should We Use Stain Resistant Spray on Chemicals?

In Europe, the precautionary principle would suggest let's not use this chemical because it looks worrisome. In the US, we might say, well, this might look worrisome, but we don't have the absolute data to say that it's a problem so we'll keep using it. So are there some things that we can do? I think most of us would probably stumble because we wouldn't know what the heck they were.
