Boris Yacubchik was born in Russia and moved to the US at the age of 11. As a college student working part-time he read Famine, Affluence and Morality which helped inspire him to begin making small monthly donations to Oxfam and UNICEF. For his 25th birthday he created a birthday for charity website and encouraged friends to give money to a charity he picked rather than give him gifts.
